Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County to host Centennial Celebration

May 29, 2013 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

image001Kingston, NY – In 1913: Woodrow Wilson was inaugurated as the 28th President of the United States, the first prize was inserted into a Cracker Jack box, Grand Central Station opened in New York City, Henry Ford instituted the first moving assembly line for motor cars and Cornell Cooperative Extension opened its doors in Ulster County.

The Centennial Celebration is our recognition of people and communities and their progress through a century of challenge and opportunity. The new century brings us new versions of those challenges, but our original idea is as powerful as ever: everyday people, working together, using science and collective experience in their lives to solve present problems and those that lie ahead.

In its 100th year, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County (CCEUC) still lives by our mission. We invite you to celebrate with us. CCEUC will host their “Centennial Celebration” on Saturday June 1 in the parking lot of our Education Center located at 232 Plaza Road in Kingston at the Kingston Plaza. Rain or shine, the birthday party will go on!

Festivities will begin at 9:00am with the annual Master Gardeners Great Plant Swap and Sale. Opening ceremonies for the Centennial Celebration will be at 11:00am, led by our guest speakers, Ulster County Executive, Mike Hein, City of Kingston Mayor, Shayne Gallo. Our guest host Emcee will be Ward Todd, President and CEO of the Ulster Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Lots of great family activities are planned, including:

  • Live family entertainment by Rich Hines, Ratboy Jr, The Old Double E, Mister Kick
  • Centennial Birthday Cake
  • Art activities for the kids
  • 4-H Exhibits
  • Hula Hooping
  • Rocketry Demo
  • Furry Friends Exhibit
  • “Centennial” Yard Dash
  • Great Food
  • Art Exhibit “People, Places & Things in Ulster County” in the Education Center from 5:30pm to 7:30pm will feature Ulster County themed artwork from various local artists. Live jazz music will be performed by guitarist, James Copp.

Cooperative Extension’s connection with Cornell University dates back to 1865, when Cornell was founded as New York State’s land-grant university. Since its inception, the Land Grant idea was that if people had access to university based knowledge and applied it to their everyday lives, stronger individuals, families, and communities would be the result. It was an idea based on a belief that individual success, democracy, and hard work could see us through any challenges.

The Cornell Cooperative Extension System provides access for New Yorkers to their Land Grant University and extends the boundaries of the campus to every corner of the state. CCEUC offers resources, tools and education through on-going community programming. Program areas include Agriculture, Horticulture, 4-H Youth Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Environmental programs.

CCEUC is a registered 501(c) 3 non-profit educational organization, and is part of the Cornell Cooperative Extension land grant system, a partnership between County, State, and Federal governments. The mission of CCE is to enable people to improve their lives and communities through partnerships that put experience and research knowledge to work. Extension staff and trained volunteers deliver education programs, conduct applied research, and foster community collaborations.
